Blog modification will commence again

I just read in a newly published book (the book is in Indonesian, and I can't see it anywhere at the moment), that having a left sidebar on a blog does not help search engines to find the blog when someone searches for keywords.

This might be the reason why since I changed the template of my blog, the impressions and clicks on my blogs went down significantly (my adsense reporting wasn't that much to start with, now it's almost nothing at all)..

Now I have to try to find a way to keep my blog interesting and informative while bearing my personality, and at the same time, letting search engine find it easily.

Let's see, how much better I can make my blog this time. I know it will be great to actually earn some money from adsense, but the most importantly, I really want to learn how to build a good blog, both from content side and format side (artistically and financially).

I will come back with the title and author of the book I was talking about.. :-)

See you soon!

A Link About Copyright Myths

I have posted the same blog post with the same title on my other blog: "Orcalion's Storyland".

It is a link to an important blog post by Brad Templeton about the "10 Big Myths About Copyright Explained".

Orcalion's Bookshop: A New Addition to Orcalion's World

Hi Everyone

As you have noticed, I have slightly changed the menu buttons (underneath the Blog Title):
Journal - to - My Journal
Storyland - to - My Storyland
Favourite - to - My Favourite

There is also a new addition to the menu buttons, which is 'My Bookshop'.

The bookshop is a great new addition, as it is a link to items I handpicked myself from Amazon.co.uk's collection to offer to you. You can see the samples of the items in the bookshop in the banner below the blog posts.

I hope this bookshop can be useful to all of you.

Have a great day!

3rd Step of Blog Makeover

Now I have to face reality that this blog carries too much 'burden' because I tried to put every aspect of my life here.

I have to make a drastic change!

I am planning to maintain a blog for each topic (family, writing, freelancing, etc.), but they will all connect together. I will see how I go with that.

The next time you come in here, you might find things are very different from how they are now, but I promise you that you will not be missing anything. Instead, you will see how this blog has moved forward from its basic-initial shape.

Thank you for your patience.

Second Step of Blog Makeover

I have finished the second step of making over my blog.

I think it now looks more alive.. :-)

I am happy with it for now..

First Step of Blog Makeover

Wow! I cannot believe how long it took me to play around with images and colours to pretty up this blog!

Not to mention the self-learning of some HTML and CSS codes. Finally, those 'Pascal' sessions during high school have some use in my life :-)

I know that this is not perfect yet, as this is only my first attempt at blog makeover. I will see whether it hurts my eyes tomorrow..

Please let me know what you think..

Thank you.

My Blogspot Makeover Coming Soon.. :-)

I finally found the book that I needed when I was in the book store yesterday, 'Teknik Makeover Blogspot' (in Indonesian), by Dominikus Juju. The Book gives a few examples of little things we can do to our blogspot account to make it look a litter nicer.

I have always thought that blogspot has very good basic templates and I have seen the modified versions that people have. Those modified templates look really good with the combination of Blogspot's original simple but professional look basic template and the individual makeover that makes the blog represents the owner's personality.

The biggest problem that I have is that I don't have any knowledge about HTML or CSS. However, this problem can be solved (in the most basic ways) with a little codes provided in the book. Once I am familiar with these simple codes, I can always learn the more complex ones.

I really like my current template, as it provides the widest post area. However, I would like to try to make some modifications to make it look more 'ME'. All of you are most welcome to give me any comments about the changes that I make.

Have a good day!

Back to 'QUICKEN'

After I'm not sure how long.. finally, two days ago, I was back using Quicken (the accounting software I used during university study), as it was getting a bit too much to try to record and analyse my personal and family finance manually (with the help of MS-Excel). My husband has also been having difficulties in understanding what I intend to show in my spreadsheets and calculations! Not to mention remembering the due dates for payments (Haha..)

As I am determined to 'successfully work' from home, I really need the help of a good accounting software that can record my transactions well and provide a good analysis on how things are going on the financial side of my life.. So, my husband gave me a latest version of 'Quicken'! (yess!!)

After trying it for a few days.. I found that this latest version of Quicken is a lot different from the version I used back then (it was around 1997 when I used it the first time), and I am still trying to figure out how to show the 'non-cash' transaction in the journals I post.. hmm..

Along the time I was working (about 5 years), I was using SAP Financial, and although the program was not perfect (as nothing in life is perfect), but the way SAP presents the journals of transactions is very 'real' just like we are doing accounts manually.. the only difference is that the ledger and statements are done by the time our journals are done! (that is what I love about accounting software).

While SAP is more 'common accounting' .. Quicken, on the other hand is more concerned about analysing the financial position that we are in for any given time span. This is a good thing for someone who would like to know how they have been doing financially and what should they do to set and achieve their financial goals in the future.

However, the chart of accounts (categories) have been pre-set for us in Quicken, and in some ways that helps, but in others, it does create some confusion.. I guess, (a blind guess, anyway), the categories were set for people who would like to handle their personal finance without much external help and without any basic accounting knowledge..

Maybe what I really need is another software that is more concerned about journals and reports/statements.. but, (blind guess again).. my husband will be more assisted with Quicken, as the details of each asset/liabilities and accounts (bank accounts, insurance, etc.) are recorded and presented in detail and very clearly..

Hmm.. let me think about this a bit more as I go through this program a little further. I will write again soon, and let you know of how I'm going.. Oh, almost forgot.. please leave a comment if you have any suggestions for me.

Thanks and see you again!

Computer Games..

To some parents, computer games are the 'worst enemies' .. they can't stop trying to get their kids away from the computer!!

Well.. my husband and I have been using a different approach, and so far, it has been working well.

To start with, we keep in mind that the game creators created games to be stress-relievers or hobbies to spend free time. So, we should not be stressed out by them. At the same time, we need to make our kids understand that games are not meant to be 'The Main Thing' in life either! However, without the right approach, we may be more afraid of the games, as the kids are more stressed out by our screams and shouts (which will lead them to play more games!)

If any of you want to try.. (for parents who have been 'anti-games' might take a while to change the 'war-zone' feel..)

Step 1: Parents Should Try Playing Computer Games
Before we shout around telling our kids to shut those games off, try playing a game or two that suits our style.. (something more relax eg. Big Kahuna Reef or Boggle). The purpose is to understand how our kids feel when they are playing their games.

Step 2: Watch While Our Kids Playing Their Games
For a few minutes (at least), we should try to watch while our kids playing their computer games. At the same time, ask them what the objectives of the games (how to win, what to do, the bonuses, the characters, etc.), and get the feel of what makes our kids excited in playing it. Once we understand the games, we will be more involved (feel the suspense, etc.)

Step 3: Figure Out The Best Time to Ask Our Kids To Pause Playing
When we understand the rhythm/phases of computer games, it will be easier to ask our kids to pause/stop playing (ask them to stop/pause during level change, pit stop, etc.)

Step 4: Make A Timetable
Once the kids understand that we understand their feelings and excitement, we can set up a timetable on when they can play their games, or even.. when we can play together! When this happens, computer games may be one alternative of family entertainment, especially when budget does not allow for traveling or dining out..

Our kids may feel strange seeing their 'anti-games' parents sitting in front of the computer trying to play computer games, but very soon, they will appreciate it and even get comfortable laughing at our 'funny' moves that repeatedly killing our characters in the game.

Before long, both sides (parents and kids) can see the games in the same way.. as leisure, entertainment and stress-reliever. Once this happens, kids' need for the way out of pressures from parents will be reduced, as their stress are almost completely relieved during the time they play their games and interacting in a relax situation with their parents (it may be one of the healthy times for kids to laugh at their parents!)

Games are created to be stress-relievers and entertainment. We should think of them as the game-creators do. So, we should use the games as stress-relievers (and not stress-triggers!). Once we successfully do this, we can teach our kids to do the same.

My 5-year-old tells me when he is tired of playing games, or when he just wants to watch me playing games, while he is trying to get some sleep. There are also times when he chooses to listen to music, or play the drum, or just running around with his little brother. The bottom line is that he knows that playing computer games is ONLY one out of many relaxing activities that he can choose from.. and NOT the only one..

I hope this can help any parents who are stressed out by computer games..

Pay Per Post

After the very long search for the right site, I finally found the website that I'm looking for! A website where I can blog about the things I love and do reviews on subjects I know or interested in. And.. I'm getting paid to do those things!

I found Pay Per Post (PPP) for the first time when I was checking my emails and the advertisement popped up and I signed up straight away. What I love the most about PPP is that there are a lot of interesting opportunities to write on and there are a lot of other good and interesting blogs to read and learn from.

This is still very early in my subscription in PPP but, I have already learned a few important things, e.g. if my friends are interested in subscribing, they can be paid to review my posts and to have their posts reviewed by others. They can also be paid to write and make review about the things they like.

My dream is to be able to stay close to my children (especially because my husband often has job offers overseas) and still has income for myself and to spend it on my discretion. I know I can achieve it with PPP. drive traffic

I believe that PPP is a very good site for anyone who wants to find the opportunities to write and have better knowledge about various things they love.

Happy blogging!
